TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF ASTHMA WITH TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a unique approach to treating asthma, based on the understanding that the disease results from energy imbalances affecting organs such as the lungs, spleen and kidneys. The goal is to restore the balance of Qi (vital energy), strengthen the body and treat the underlying causes, not just the symptoms.

The main techniques are:

  • Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the most studied and applied techniques in the treatment of asthma. The choice of points varies according to the individual energetic diagnosis and may include points such as Feishu (B13), Zhongfu (P1), Dingchuan (extra), among others. Acupuncture works by improving lung function, reducing inflammation and regulating the immune system.

  1. Reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks, relieving symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath

  2. Reduce inflammation in the airways and the allergic response, essential factors in controlling asthma

  3. Improve lung function and ventilation, promoting more efficient breathing

  4. Provide psychological benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety, which can worsen asthma symptoms.

According to an international study, combining acupuncture with conventional treatment resulted in significant improvements in patients' physical and mental health, as well as an increase in their quality of life. Another relevant fact is that 85% of patients with allergic asthma showed improvement after regular acupuncture sessions.

  • Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves applying heat to acupuncture points, usually by burning the herb Artemisia vulgaris . This technique stimulates the meridians, strengthens Qi (energy) and warms the body, and is especially useful in cases of Yang deficiency or cold invasion. Moxibustion can improve immunity, inhibit airway inflammation and reduce bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), which is the excessive sensitivity of the airways that become narrow.

  • Chinese Phytotherapy

The use of herbal formulas (Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine) is personalized for each patient, aiming to strengthen the lungs, eliminate mucus, reduce inflammation and balance energy. The formulas are adjusted according to the diagnosed energy pattern, such as excess mucus, heat or energy deficiency.

  • Tui Na (Therapeutic Massage)

Tui Na therapeutic massage can be used, especially in children or people with an aversion to needles, to stimulate points and meridians, relieve symptoms and promote energy balance.

  • Cupping and Auriculotherapy

Cupping therapy and auriculotherapy are complementary techniques that help relieve symptoms, strengthen the respiratory system and reduce the frequency of attacks.

  • Breathing Exercises and Qi Gong

Practices such as Qi Gong and breathing exercises are recommended to improve lung capacity, relax the chest muscles and promote the free flow of Qi, helping both in the prevention and control of crises.

  • Dietetics

Certain foods can aggravate asthma, such as ultra-processed and fried foods.

  • Differentiated Diagnosis and Individualized Treatment

In TCM, diagnosis is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment. Asthma can be classified into different syndromes, such as wind-cold invasion, phlegm-heat, kidney deficiency, among others, and each requires a specific combination of techniques and treatment points.

  • Osteopathy: Structural Balance and Respiratory Improvement

Osteopathy, through manual techniques, seeks to restore the structural balance of the body, including the mobility of the rib cage, diaphragm and respiratory muscles. By releasing restrictions in these areas, osteopathy can:

  • Facilitate lung expansion and ventilation.

  • Reduce muscle tension that makes breathing difficult.

  • Improve secretion drainage and circulation, contributing to the reduction of crises and symptoms.

  • Strengthen the diaphragm in order to better control abdominal breathing.

Integrative Approach and Safety

Both Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture and Osteopathy are considered complementary therapies, that is, they must be integrated with conventional medical treatment.

Conclusion

The integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture and Osteopathy in the treatment of asthma offers proven benefits, such as reduced symptoms, improved lung function, reduced inflammation and improved quality of life. Always consult a qualified health professional to assess your case and indicate the best therapeutic plan.
